Forest fires are one of the natural disasters that are increasingly occurring in various parts of the world. The increase in the frequency and intensity of forest fires can be caused by various factors, including climate change, human activities, and unsustainable forest management practices. In recent years, the area burned by forest fires has increased significantly, with detrimental impacts on ecosystems, local economies and human health. The latest data shows that forest fires in tropical and subtropical areas are experiencing a surge, with countries such as Brazil, Australia and Indonesia taking center stage. In Brazil, forest fires in the Amazon, known as the “lungs of the world,” are increasing sharply due to deforestation and uncontrolled agricultural activities. This not only threatens biodiversity, but also contributes to increasing global carbon emissions. In Australia, bushfires in recent years, especially during extreme summer heat, have caused extensive damage to natural habitats. These fires are fueled by higher temperatures and erratic rainfall. According to reports, 2019-2020 was one of the worst fire seasons in the country’s history, with millions of hectares of land scorched and thousands of species threatened with extinction. In Indonesia, forest fires often occur as a result of land clearing practices for agriculture, especially oil palm. This practice not only damages forests, but also causes smog that pollutes the air in neighboring countries. Apart from environmental impacts, forest fires also trigger serious health problems, such as respiratory problems and diseases related to air pollution. Climate change plays an important role in the increase in forest fires. Warmer global temperatures are causing longer and more intense dry seasons, creating ideal conditions for fires to occur. In addition, extreme weather phenomena such as El NiƱo also contribute to the increase in fires, by changing rainfall and temperature patterns in various parts of the world. Forest fire mitigation measures are urgent. A more sustainable approach to forest management, including restoration of burned areas and adoption of environmentally friendly agricultural practices, is key to meeting this challenge. Public awareness and cross-country collaboration are very important to overcome this problem, considering the impact of forest fires that do not respect territorial boundaries. Information technology also plays a role in monitoring forest fires. By using satellites and early detection systems, authorities can respond more quickly and reduce the impact of fires. Efforts to educate the public regarding the risks of forest fires and the importance of protecting the environment must continue to be carried out to prevent destructive practices. Forest fires are a global problem that is always growing. Collective efforts from governments, communities and non-governmental organizations are urgently needed to face these challenges, ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems and the health of the planet for future generations.
